By N.K. Jemisin.
There’s no way I could ever describe the emotional depth that N.K. Jemisin evokes in this series. She brings such an intelligent understanding of people and character from her life experience and as a social worker. The world she creates is so intricate and beautifully broken, that I’d be insulting the gods to compare anything I’ve ever read in the fantasy genre to this masterpiece. My quick describe of this series is geophysical magic meets Beloved, and leave it at that. Though I like to warn those left emotionally vulnerable because of covid not to attempt this series until you’re on solid ground. I literally had to devour the last two books just to find a shred of light at the end of the abyss. This story is a genre changer, but very hard on the heart.
