Summer has come and gone. School has started and stopped. I’m displaced by the flames, but my house remains not burnt down by the CZU Lighting Complex Fire. That is something I am extremely grateful for. Not everyone I know is so fortunate.
The things you grab when you have to leave immediately are this strange collection of the absolute necessary to the emotional irreplaceable to random plastic junk my kids happened to get them the weekend before. So essentially, three socks (not sock pairs), my husband’s photograph from South Africa of his grandmother and her family when she was a baby, and a rainbow slap bracelet connected to a bit of string.
My family and I, including my two cats, took a trip down to southern California to get some “Fresh Air”. You know something’s amiss when you drive to the LA area to get fresh air. My ginger tabby cat Sunny, who often leaves us fecal presents when we go on vacation, will never be upset by leaving him at home ever again.
Writing has been on pause for now. I have all my tools, but my mind is still scattered. This wasn’t the case during the 100 degree days leading up to the crazy thunderstorms, but it is for now.
Before all this, I had been working on my next manuscript (not Meige), refining the feminine story to better fit into the book and genre. Once all this clears, I’m going to reread the two challenging chapters I made headway on last week. If the tension and story move well enough, I can wrap that end of the story and move the manuscript from first draft phase into the polishing phase.
(It’s very strange writing about writing that right now, because it really is the furthest things from my mind.)
