Sorting a Tangle… Artistically

Sorting a Tangle… Artistically
May 1, 2020 by Michelle McCollyer

After taking a weekend off to celebrate my little girl’s birthday, I’m back… That is, if taking a week off means not making a blog post, that’s what I mean. I’m never quite “off”, but simply distracted by life.

I reconnected with a friend I met at the San Francisco Writers Conference this week, and join in writer’s group that’s discussing publishing. I found it interesting because he’s been pursuing the self publishing angle, while I’ve been pursing traditional publishing. I’m hoping to swap notes with him on that soon.

Also, I submitted a few more query letters this week to agents I’d been researching from MSWishlist.com. I always intended to submit a few more after the small wave I sent two weeks ago, but life happened. Good thing to do to begin May.

This weekend’s goals:

I’m continuing to recreate my alternate debute novel, though I’m still wrestling with composition (IE whose voice tells which part). There’s… a lot of work involved. Even the chapters I’m writing are first draft material that need many hours of layering and editing. I haven’t quite landed on an idea that solidifies into that gut feeling of “I’ve nailed it”. The entire thing is a rat tangle of ideas and narration. It’s still fun re-imagining/rewriting scenes from other character’s perspectives, though I’m cringing at the same time. I find myself editing away these beautiful supporting characters, and that makes me sad.

And I keep thinking, if the murdered King wasn’t so cruel, then my story would be less dark.

Perhaps I can make some sense of it this weekend.

And yet the sequel to Ari’s manuscript keeps whispering in my ear…

Have a pleasant weekend.
