I loved this book, but being my first Kindle read, I became annoyed with not knowing how long it really was. It has lots of twists with folklore and myth changing depending on who’s telling the story. I loved the eastern vs western dragons aspect, and the variety of world and place. By far the most compelling character was old Niclays, the banished man reflecting on an intimate life with his former lover/partner. Though there’s a decent attempt at the stickiness of court politics, I could never get a good sense of underlying manipulations and power struggles like GOT. Perhaps the resolution of power between various courts at the end came too easy.
This made a wonderful comp-title to my Breath of Meige manuscript, a scrappy female protagonist with unclaimed emotions for other females and a wariness of companionship, but doesn’t fit my current manuscript, Curse of Crows.
